Use of Artificial Intelligence Tools
This clerkship policy is issued pursuant to, and must be read in conjunction with, the Mount Sinai Health System AI Implementation and Use Policy and the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai Policy on Using Artificial Intelligence in Teaching, Learning, and Discovery. In the event of any inconsistency, the Mount Sinai Health System policy shall govern. This clerkship policy is also pursuant to the MD Program Academic Integrity Policy.
In accordance with these institutional policies, students in this clerkship may use Mount Sinai–approved and licensed AI tools (including ChatGPT Edu and ISMMS Gemini) only for approved educational purposes, such as concept clarification, clinical reasoning practice, or reflective learning. AI tools may be used solely to support learning and may not be relied upon for clinical decision-making or patient care.
Students may enter clinical information into AI tools only after fully removing all patient identifiers and other Sensitive Information, consistent with institutional privacy and data-security standards. Prohibited information includes, but is not limited to, patient names, dates of birth, medical record numbers, addresses, telephone numbers, beneficiary numbers, and full-face photographs.
All AI use must be limited in scope, transparent, and professionally appropriate, and students remain fully responsible for reviewing, verifying, and appropriately contextualizing any AI-generated outputs. AI tools are intended to augment learning and reflection and do not replace independent clinical reasoning, judgment, or professional accountability.
Use of generative AI tools for graded assessments, examinations, clinical documentation, patient notes, or any other evaluative or official clerkship components is strictly prohibited, unless explicitly authorized in written assessment instructions. Any misuse of AI tools or violation of institutional AI, privacy, or professionalism policies may result in academic or disciplinary action in accordance with Mount Sinai policies.
