At the end of this clerkship, a student will be able to:

MD Program Objective

Demonstrate the ability to thoroughly assess a patient with potential psychiatric illness, including:

  • Conducting a complete history inclusive of clinical data required to complete a suicide and violence risk assessment .

  • Conducting a complete physical exam inclusive of a mental status exam

  • Gathering and interpreting laboratory and radiographic studies and other tests to aid in the psychiatric diagnostic assessment (e.g., TSH, folate, Vitamin B12, ANC, BMI, metabolic panel, toxicology panel, drug levels, etc.)

1. Gather essential and accurate information about patients and their conditions through history-taking, physical examination, and the use of laboratory data, imaging, and other tests.

2. Interpret laboratory data, imaging studies, and other tests required for the area of practice.

Formulate a prioritized differential diagnosis for common psychiatric illnesses (e.g., psychotic disorders, unipolar and bipolar depression, suicidality, personality disorders, substance use disorders):

  • applying knowledge of pathophysiology

  • applying the biopsychosocial model

3: Make informed decisions about diagnostic and therapeutic interventions.

8: Apply knowledge of the biomedical sciences to care for patients.

9: Apply the biopsychosocial model to the hospital care of psychiatric patients.

Demonstrate effective written and oral communication with all members of the healthcare team in the hospital setting, including:

  • Communicating gathered clinical data

  • Communicating assessments and plans

11: Communicate effectively with colleagues within one's profession or specialty, other health professionals, and health related agencies.

Demonstrate the ability to establish a therapeutic alliance with patients and families of various cultural and demographic backgrounds and communicate in an empathetic, respectful, culturally attuned and efficient manner, including:

  • Demonstrating effective communication with patients and their families and/or caregivers across a broad range of socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds

  • Empathically and clearly communicating diagnostic impressions and treatment options to patients and their families so that they can participate in their care.

  • Enabling shared decision making, avoiding the use of medical jargon, and in manner consistent with efforts to reduce societal stigma of mental illness

  • Responding to patient distress and emotion with professionalism and empathy

5: Counsel and educate patients and their families so that they can participate in their care and enable shared decision making.

10: Communicate effectively with patients and families across a broad range of socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds.

Design a treatment plan:

  • utilizing evidence-based medicine and best practices

  • utilizing a multi-modal approach in the treatment of psychiatric disorders

  • applying knowledge of pathophysiology regarding common psychiatric conditions

  • applying the biopsychosocial framework, demonstrating awareness of the patient, family and community resources that are relevant to the patient’s psychiatric presentation

Recognize manifestations of structural and social determinants of health that impact psychiatric patients in the hospital setting.
