Comments from Specialty Advisor

Signals generally should be used more for ‘reach’ programs or programs where you may be overlooked

Letters of Recommendation

Standardized Letter of Evaluation (SLOE)?

No

Departmental/Chair Letter?

No

Who should other letters come from?

At least 1 from a family medicine physician

1 from any specialty that could be pertinent to family medicine (ie wouldn’t be as helpful to get one from a surgeon, but psych might be even though not primary care, peds, IM, Ob-Gyn, etc)

1-2 from anyone who knows you well and has worked with you longitudinally-so a mentor or someone you did research with

Interviewing and Post Interview Communication

Applications are downloaded by programs...

On the first date they are available- students should submit everything prior to that date

This specialty’s MSH program interviews all ISMMS students who apply.

Yes

Interviews are sent out...

any time after applications are available, invitations are rolling

Thank You Emails

Yes, definitely a good idea

May be worth doing for any reach programs that you really want to go to or if you’re genuinely very set on a program for specific reasons (unique experience the program offers or if your partner/family is there). It doesn’t hurt to mention any personal ties, but definitely don’t make that seem like the only reason you want to match there. Letters of intent are not going to make or break your chances, but can usually move you up in ranking.

Letters of Intent

Yes, letters of intent are helpful to programs and applicants but make sure you're only sending to one program if you are telling them they are #1 on your rank list. Consult with an advisor before sending.
