Guidelines for Transport to Required Clerkships and Acting Internships

The primary methods of transportation to and from required clerkships and acting internships are:

Medical students are assigned to various clinical sites in the five boroughs of New York City in order to complete required clerkships and acting internships in the MD program. Transportation to and from these sites are the responsibility of the student.

To facilitate transportation to clinical sites, the school provides a free shuttle service during designated times. To facilitate late-night transportation home from clinical sites, the school provides a ride share service within the allowable circumstances described below.

Ride Share Service Allowable Circumstances

The school provides ride share service only if all the following conditions are met:

  • Travel is related to a required clerkship/acting internship (see list below). Travel related to other courses are not eligible. AND

  • Travel is within the five boroughs of New York City. AND

  • Travel is FROM a required clerkship/acting internship (list below) to the student’s destination. Travel TO a required clerkship/acting internship is not eligible. AND

  • Travel must be initiated between the hours of 11pm and 5am*

*Students may not arrive unnecessarily early or deliberately wait at their site after the end of shift in order to qualify for a ride share service

Inappropriate Use of Ride Share Service

A monthly audit of the ride share service account will be conducted by the Office of Curricular Affairs. Any charge that does not meet the allowable conditions set forth above must be reimbursed by the student within two weeks of receiving notification. Failure to submit reimbursement within the timeframe will result in a student account hold, preventing any future course registration or change. Students required to submit more than three reimbursements in any semester will be reported to the Office of Student Affairs for possible disciplinary actions, including but not limited to warning, probation or dismissal.

Cost of Attendance for Medical School

There is a unique cost of attendance budget published by the Office of Student Financial Services for each year of the MD program. The average cost for travel to clinical sites is included in the cost of attendance. The cost of attendance budget includes the expected costs for tuition and fees, educational expenses, and personal expenses for the associated year of the program. Transportation costs are included in the educational expenses budget for years where travel is a required curricular component of the MD program. This Academic Year, the estimated cost for transportation for a 3rd year student is $750.

Students who need assistance with expenses beyond what is calculated in the Cost of Attendance should contact the Office of Student Financial Services at studentfinancialservices@mssm.edu for financial counseling.
