The Medical School Performance Evaluation (MSPE)

ISMMS provides each student with a MSPE letter when applying for post-graduate training to enhance the transcript. The document is intended to provide a fair summary of student’s performance.

The MSPE includes a review of student’s:

  • Identifying Information

    • Pre-medical school summary

    • 3-4 Noteworthy Characteristics

  • Academic History including:

    • Dates of matriculation and expected graduation,

    • Dual Degrees

    • Special Programs

    • Repeat/remediate coursework

    • Any adverse actions taken by the medical school

  • Professional Performance

  • Accolades

  • Completion of preclinical coursework

  • Summaries of clinical performance for core clerkships taken in the clerkship year including:

    • Clerkship Grades

    • Composition of clerkship grades

    • Distribution of clerkship grades

    • Summative Clerkship Comments

  • Summary paragraph.

Please note: the ‘noteworthy characteristics’ and ‘premedical school’ sections are designed to provide a summary of achievements. This is not a place to list every achievement you’ve gotten, but will be examples of themes such as philanthropy, research, leadership skills, etc.

Your Career Advisor will meet with you to discuss the premedical section and noteworthy characteristics students complete in April. Their role in the MSPE process is to help edit the pre-medical school and noteworthy characteristics sections to highlight your main achievements. Please note that they do not play a role in any evaluative processes. They DO NOT assist in any edits to your clerkship comments- they only review these comments with students for factual errors. The Office of Medical Student Affairs helps edit for readability but does not change the meaning or content of clerkship comments. The office retains some latitude in editing departmental comments in order to provide accurate information about student performance.

Any major disciplinary sanctions imposed during medical school will be included in the MSPE. The MSPE will include information about required remediation or repeat of academic performance, as appropriate. The MSPE will also include information about major remediation of coursework, typically repeating a year of modules or an entire clerkship.

Gold Humanism Honor Society nominees and ISMMS-sponsored honors and awards may be mentioned.
