Practice of Medicine 1

Module Description

This longitudinal module is designed to integrate theoretical knowledge with essential clinical skills early in medical education. This module systematically develops students' abilities in patient assessment, history taking, physical examination, communication, and ethical decision-making, laying the groundwork for their future clinical practice. Through interactive workshops, simulated patient encounters, and reflective practice, students will begin to cultivate the core competencies necessary for patient care. The module emphasizes the importance of professionalism, patient-centered communication, and the basics of clinical reasoning, preparing students for their subsequent clinical rotations and fostering a lifelong commitment to excellence in medicine.

Module Goals

  • To introduce and develop fundamental clinical skills essential for patient care.

  • To establish effective communication techniques with patients and healthcare teams.

  • To introduce critical thinking and decision-making in the context of patient assessment and care.

  • To instill professional values, ethics, and reflective practice in future physicians.

Module Learning Objectives

By the end of this module, students will:

Module Learning Objective

Medical Education Program Objective

Elicit comprehensive medical histories through simulated patient interactions, using open- ended questioning, active listening, and ensuring accurate documentation, while respecting patient comfort and privacy during physical examinations.

Patient Care

1. Gather essential and accurate information about patients and their conditions through history-taking, physical examination, and the use of laboratory data, imaging, and other tests.

Personal and Professional Development

18. Evaluate one's personal, professional, and educational needs through reflection and utilize resources to meet those needs.

Systems-Based Practice

22. Identify and participate in solutions to failures in high quality, equitable and optimal patient care.

Demonstrate effective verbal and non-verbal communication techniques to build rapport and establish trust with simulated patients, emphasizing patient-centered care and empathy.

Patient Care

5. Counsel and educate patients and their families so that they can participate in their care and enable shared decision making.

Personal and Professional Development

18. Evaluate one's personal, professional, and educational needs through reflection and utilize resources to meet those needs.

Identify essential components of medical histories relevant to clinical scenarios and practice documenting these accurately, including physical examination findings and patient concerns in written format.

Patient Care 1. Gather essential and accurate information about patients and their conditions through history-taking, physical examination, and the use of laboratory data, imaging, and other tests.

Systems-Based Practice

22. Identify and participate in solutions to failures in high quality, equitable and optimal patient care.

Reflect on performance in simulated interactions to improve skills, incorporating feedback from peers and instructors to refine techniques in history-taking, physical examinations, and written communications.

Personal and Professional Development

17. Evaluate one's personal, professional, and educational needs through reflection and utilize resources to meet those needs.

Interpersonal and Communication Skills

19. Communicate effectively with patients, families, and caregivers across a broad range of socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds.

Recognize and prepare to adjust communication and care strategies based on the cultural, social, and personal factors influencing health beliefs and practices; understand and address the social and structural determinants of health as they impact patient interactions and

outcomes.

Knowledge for Practice

10. Apply principles of public and population health to the identification of health problems, risk factors, treatment strategies, resources, and disease prevention/health promotion efforts for patients and populations.

11. Apply principles of social-behavioral sciences to the delivery of healthcare.

Systems-Based Practice

23. Demonstrate approaches to addressing structural factors that may impact healthcare delivery and patient outcomes.

Develop a differential diagnosis for simulated patients based on clinical assessments, using evidence-based principles. Include discussions on how social determinants affect health and the implications for treatment planning.

Knowledge for Practice

9. Apply established and emerging principles of clinical sciences to diagnostic and therapeutic decision-making, clinical problem-solving, and other aspects of evidence-based health care.

10. Apply principles of public and population health to the identification of health problems, risk factors, treatment strategies, resources, and disease prevention/health promotion efforts for patients and populations.

Discuss ethical considerations and professionalism, while applying these principles consistently in simulated healthcare team collaborations and documenting patient interactions with precision and clarity.

Practice-Based Learning and Improvement

14. Demonstrate situational and self-awareness to guide thinking and behavior in the practice of medicine.

Professionalism

15. Demonstrate ethical principles in the care of patients.

16. Exhibit the behaviors of honesty, integrity, and respect in interactions with peers, staff, faculty, and patients.

Systems-Based Practice

22. Identify and participate in solutions to failures in high quality, equitable and optimal patient care.

Identify and practice components of the core physical examination with simulated patients for assessment of the head and neck, pulmonary, cardiac, abdominal, and neurologic exams.

Patient Care

1. Gather essential and accurate information about patients and their conditions through history-taking, physical examination, and the use of laboratory data, imaging, and other tests.
